One of the central goals of the U.S. -Mexico Border Sustainable Scrap Tire Management Project, is to work in partnership with community and environmental non-governmental organizations in Mexico to assess the environmental and public health impacts of burning tires in cement kilns and other industrial furnaces, and push for alternative solutions such as rubber paving and the use of scrap tires in other public projects.
