TCPS, Texas Center for Policy Studies Research for Community Action
Big Bend.

Project Elements

TCPS worked with a variety of partners in the US and Mexico to facilitate dialogue on border water issues and provide information on key issues, particularly with regard to water supply planning, the US/Mexico water treaty dispute and water use and trends in the Rio Conchos region of the Mexican Chihuahuan Desert. Another element of the project involves coordinating public involvement in restoration of the stretch of the Rio Grande running just downstream of Fort Quitman to Big Bend National Park. This effort involves the Forgotten River Advisory Committee (FRAC).

TCPS also monitors specific porjects that may be considered environmentally damaging to the Rio Grande in order to promote alternatives to traditional sources of water supply. TCPS has monitored and commented on the proposed Brownsville Weir and Reservoir project, notifying regulatory agencies and the public about this project's potential to impact riparian habitat and water quality both downstream and upstream of the proposed site.
